Would you put toxic chemicals on your face?

The answer is NO?

Then why do you use makeup that is toxic?

Most makeup products out there today have ingredients that are carcinogenic. They are tested on animals in the cruelest practice. Our bodies are absorbing all these toxins and making us sick. These toxins have long term impact on our health that may not show until later years. As consumers, we can put pressure on the industry to go natural and organic. The more we clean up our bodies the more the industry will be inclined to keep up.

Looking good is easy, when you know you are doing the right thing by your own body and the environment.

Ten chemicals to avoid in personal care products:

To help you to avoid potentially toxic chemicals when purchasing personal care products for yourself, and for your family we’ve prepared this quick reference guide.

Phthalates have been linked to birth defects and cancer, and are known to damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive system. Look for: DBP (dibutylphthalate), DEP (diethylphthalate) and butyl ester.

These common foaming agents are also used to clean engines and garage floors. Sometimes disguised as ‘derived from coconut’, they are nasty skin irritants and can form nitrosamines (a deadly carcinogenic) when combined with other chemicals.

Are thought to be carcinogenic and linked to breast cancer in particular. Look for: butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, methlyparaben, propylparaben.

This petroleum by-product clogs the skin, prevents it from breathing and detoxifying naturally, causes premature aging, and can be contaminated with carcinogens that are linked to breast cancer. Look for: mineral oil, petroleum, liquid paraffin.

This is a misleading euphemism that refers to nearly 4,000 synthetics, which are allergens that can attack the central nervous system, and are known to trigger asthma attacks.

These derivatives of formaldehyde (which is used to preserve dead body parts) are classified by the EPA as probable human carcinogens linked to allergies, depression, insomnia and asthma. Look for: imidazolidnyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, 3-diol diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydanotin, bronopol, and quaternium-15.

PEG is also used in spray-on oven cleaners. It will strip your skin and hair of protective oils, which makes them vulnerable to other toxins.

This registered pesticide is a close cousin of Agent Orange and so toxic it’s measured in parts per trillion. It’s linked to birth defects, paralysis, heart problems and brain haemorrhages.

Is also the active ingredient in antifreeze (industrial workers are required to wear protective clothing when working with it), and is linked to brain, liver and kidney abnormalities.

These chemicals can form cancer-causing agents and are strongly linked to incidences of kidney and liver cancer.

Our Standards

Full Transparency

When it comes to regulating the personal care industry, our lawmakers have been slow to move. As a result, too many manufacturers can get away with claims that their products are natural and organic, even though they are full of synthetic chemicals and the natural ingredients they use are only a minuscule percentage of the total ingredients.

Because of government inaction we have taken action ourselves, securing certifications which guarantee that we are what we claim to be. In addition, we fully disclose all the ingredients we use. We hope that soon, the law will change. In the meantime, you can trust us to be fully transparent, so that you can be sure you’re getting the product you want.

BioGro is a New Zealand based, internationally accredited certification agency. Its seal on our products is a guarantee that they are ‘Made with Organic’, meaning that a minimum of 70% organic ingredients go into each product, or that they are ‘Organic’, with a minimum of 95% organic ingredients. It also means that the remaining ingredients are non-toxic, free of harmful synthetic chemicals and GMO ingredients, and pose no known risk to health or the environment.

You will find the vegan symbol on almost all of our packaging (there is a tiny minority of products where we use beeswax). This is a guarantee that our products are free from dairy and other animal derived products, allowing you to shop with confidence. It is also a sign of our commitment to animal welfare. We don’t test on animals and we never will.

The USDA Organic Seal is a much-respected guarantee that a product is certified organic.

The FSC symbol on our packaging lets you know that it is sourced from sustainable forestry card. Complementing this, we only print with vegetable inks.

IMO Swiss is one of the world’s leading inspection and certification agencies for organic farms. You won’t find its symbol on our packaging, but it’s important to know that our key partner in India is accredited by IMO Swiss AG under its Fair For Life Program.

The Fair For Life Program offers protection for agricultural workers across the globe, guaranteeing that producers observe strict criteria, including no forced labour or child labour, safe and decent working conditions, and freedom of association. For us, it’s another guarantee that the organic ingredients that go into our products are not only of the highest quality, but ethically sourced.

This is our personal guarantee of quality. Supercritical extraction ensures that all the life enhancing, therapeutic properties of the plants and herbs we use are captured and delivered to your skin.
